How to support a young person in counselling

Your instinct is to fix it. But the most helpful thing you can do might surprise you. A guide for parents and carers.

When a young person you love is struggling, the instinct is to do something. To fix it, to find the right words, to make it better. When they start counselling, that instinct can sometimes get in the way — even when it comes from the best possible place.

The most important thing you can do to support a young person in counselling is to respect the process. Counselling works in part because it's a confidential space — a place where a young person can say things they might not feel safe saying at home, without worrying about how it will affect the people they love.

This doesn't mean you're excluded. It means your role is different. Your job is to be a stable, non-reactive presence at home. To keep routines consistent. To make it clear, through your actions more than your words, that you're not going anywhere and that your love isn't conditional on them getting better quickly.

It also means managing your own anxiety about the process. Counselling can sometimes look like things are getting worse before they get better — a young person might become more emotional, more withdrawn, or start talking about things they've never mentioned before. This is often a sign that the work is happening, not that something has gone wrong.

If you have concerns about your young person's safety, share them directly with the counsellor — you don't need to go through your child to do this. A good counsellor will be transparent with you about the limits of confidentiality and what would prompt them to involve you.

Finally: look after yourself. Supporting someone who is struggling is hard. You're allowed to find it difficult. You're allowed to need support too.
